Photoelectric Sensors

A photoelectric sensor consists of a light beam transmitter (LED) and a light-sensitive receiver (phototransistor). When an electric current flows through the LED, it emits either visible or invisible light, depending on the transmission wavelength.

Detection happens when an object interrupts the light beam, altering the light intensity at the receiver. Once the light intensity drops below a certain threshold, the sensor output changes state, signaling detection.

Models vary by application needs, with transmission beams that are typically non-visible infrared (ideal for general detection), ultraviolet (for detecting luminescent materials), visible red or green (for reading color marks), or laser red (for long-range detection and precise focal control).

LEDs offer the benefit of rapid response time. To ensure stable performance despite ambient light, the LED current is modulated to emit pulsed light, which the phototransistor detects and uses for load control.
